Vermont Elementary
At Vermont Elementary School we added two sixty gallon rain barrels. The elementary school kids are able to use the recycled water to water the garden they are growing. In addition, we taught a lesson to the kids about the importance of saving water and the effects of runoff. The rain barrels are painted with designs picked out by the fourth graders themselves to add a fun touch (they chose fish and rain drops with the Wyoming logo!)
We gave a presentation to both fourth grade classes. We covered the water cycle, what a watershed is, the importance of watersheds, runoff pollution, and steps they could take to help reduce pollution. We then gave them options of different designs to put on the rain barrels and both classes chose the same designs!
Our volunteers dug a base for the rain barrels to sit on
Before painting the rain barrels we had to sand them down and prime them. Then we got a group of volunteers to come and help us decorate them. Using the new research and innovation center at the high school we made templates of the fish and Wyoming logos to assist us while painting.
Community Garden
For our local community garden we added a gutter system to the pre-existing shed, which connects to two fifty gallon rain barrels. Gardeners are able to help conserve water and reduce runoff by using the recycled water when watering their plants.
